The Best Audition Clothes to Buy

I have a lot of students ask me about the best audition clothes that they can get in order to maximize their chances of booking.  In my many years of experience as a professional actor and teacher of child, teen and young adult actors at my acting school in Los Angeles, I have learned a lot about the best audition clothes!

Here are Ms. Mae’s tips on the best audition clothes that you can get, and why:

Clothing that you feel good in

First of all, you must feel confident in what you are wearing. The best audition clothes to wear are garments that make you feel most like you! If you feel uncomfortable, that will come across on camera.  If you feel totally free to move, and confident to play your character, that will make your audition really sparkle!

Layers, and other TV trends.

Next time you watch TV, pay attention to the clothing that people are wearing.  You will see that layers are very common on TV shows. Jackets, sweaters, cardigans.  Even when episodes are set in warm seasons of the year, you will see characters wearing layers and light jackets.  You want to replicate this look when you are dressing for your auditions. Generally speaking, make sure that the styles that you are purchasing are current to what you are seeing on the types of TV shows you will be auditioning for.  For example, on Disney shows, the kids wear very bright colors. On cable dramas, you will see teens wearing edgier styles.

Jewel tones

I am a big fan of jewel tones.  These colors are colors of your favorite gemstones, including sapphire blue, ruby red, amethyst purple, citrine yellow, and emerald green. Of course, different colors look great on different hair colors and skin tones, so you will want to experiment and find out what the best audition clothes are for you. I always say to steer clear of solid white and solid black. It’s been said that people who wear the color blue book more often!

Form fitting

I know that it can feel trendy to wear loose fitting garments — and this is totally fine to do, when you are not auditioning for getting your headshots taken.  As a rule of thumb, unless you are going for a very specific look in which a baggy garment is called for, it’s best to wear clothing that is form fitting.  One trick for self tapes and photos is that you can use a clothes pin on the back of your garment to make it fit more tightly. However, this will not be possible in an audition room; your best audition clothes should definitely be tailored and form fitting!

Budget options.

Of course, you don’t want to break the bank while you are shopping. I recommend stores like Marshalls, Target and Old Navy.

Here in LA, we have a store called It’s a Wrap In Burbank.  At this store, they have the best audition clothes…because the clothing literally comes from film studios!  They are selling top brands for discount prices, and usually these clothes have only been work by actors once or twice on a film set.  The fabrics tend to be top quality since they have already been tested for camera.

Have fun.

Have fun exploring new wardrobe options so that you can have the best audition clothes! I am wishing you well on your shopping journey!
