Manners for Actors
How should you act when you are not acting? Your behavior is watched closely by everyone. In the entertainment business. Your behavior is noted. Actors have been fired because they behaved poorly. Gain some useful tips on what manners matter the most to make a great lasting impression.
Why Practice Good Manners?
We practice good manners, because they say to others that we care about them! When you open the door for people, chew with your mouth closed , participate in a 2 sided conversation – you make fast friends. People love when you show interest in them. So a compliment will always start the conversation in a nice, positive way.
Actors do practice proper etiquette whether you are in rehearsal, at an audition or between takes on the set.
Here is a list of basic manners:
- Be on time.
- Use compliments with a smile.
- Use please and thank you.
- Follow instructions.
- Be a civilized eater.
- Have 2 sided conversations.
- Express gratitude.
- Open doors.
- Help others.
- Be positive about everything.
Using the 10 tips above, is particularly impressive when done by child actors and shows maturity. And adults you are expected to behave. Right?
Proper Dining Manners
When you’re in line to get food, don’t over stuff your plate because everybody looks at that and thinks, “Look at that person. He’s really over stuffing his plate.” You can always go back for seconds. Believe me, there’s so much food on the set. When you sit down first of all, put your napkin on your lap. When actually eating, bring the food up to your mouth do not bend down over the plate to get your food. Don’t slurp your drink. Keep you mouth closed when you eat so you don’t gross out others. Wipe your mouth between sloppy bites. Say “excuse me” when you leave the table. I could go on with dining manners like cut your meat only 3 times etc. but as long as you use the basics you will be fine.
And also… Oh, don’t complain about the food, whatever you do, okay? Because that will get back to the caterers and the director and so on, and then you’ll be known as, a picky diva. That can happen really quick on the set.
In conclusion, show that you are a caring person. Be the actor others want to be around and spend time with. Just think, industry professionals want to work with actors who are team players and easy to work with. Wouldn’t you?
