Best Tips to a Great Head Shot #4 Makeup/Hair for Actors

Makeup

Hire a professional makeup artist! I cannot stress this enough.  A makeup artist who does makeup specifically for actors, is who you want. Both women and men need a pro. Men have redness, get shiny and have other issues that need correction too. Even minors may need makeup due to acne etc. We may have PhotoShop however, the key is for the minor (or any age actor) to feel great in front of the camera on the day of his shoot. When the actor looks into the mirror and sees great skin, he will feel confident, which equals smiles and equals a great shoot.

Lighting

A makeup artist pays close attention to the light and knows what makeup to use to make you look your best. Not working with a professional can make or break the results you get. And as the light changes she will adjust your makeup. Hair style is important with the lighting too. Back light can be a problem with the light shining thru your hair like flashlight. A big no no…

Hair

Oh my…  your hair style is crucial in properly depicting your type (s). You cannot afford a bad hair day. This is more reason to hire a professional hair stylist. If you only need light styling ask the make up artist if they do this. I have hired many who do both makeup and light hair styling. You save money this way too. For actors I recommend natural looks. Again your “every day look”. If your hair is curly keep it curly for your main head shot. If you are going for a multitude of looks, natural, glamour, character etc. you must hire a professional.

Looks

In my Best Tips to a Great Head Shot #2 Type, I explained how important it is to know your type. A great make up artist will help translate through her makeup application what “looks” you want to represent. I always recommend a natural look to represent, your “every day self,” Reminder it is super important that you look like the head shot you submitted when you walk into any audition, interview, meet and greet, and any other industry meeting.

Both makeup artist and hair stylist will stay on the shoot and be sure your lipstick is perfect and not a hair out of place. Plus you will feel like doted on and that alone makes you feel special.
