How to Find Comedic Truth

When creating comedic characters in our profession, there is no advice better than to remember that all comedy finds its grounding in the truth. Honesty is important in all acting, but especially in comedy, and finding the truth of your characters not only allows you to create a more believable performance, but will also give your audience, whether they’re the director or your family and friends, a stronger connection with your character. These small details about the character you’re creating always inform the performance. How does this character move? Do they dance when their happy, or are they the type to mope around the house? Being specificity to how your character moves through their world rounds them out, so it’s important to discover through imagination and experimentation.

                                          What is the characters story?

It’s helpful to find where the character leads from. Are they confident and, sometimes, arrogant? Perhaps that character leads with their chest, puffed up and important in order to convey confidence. Maybe the character you’re creating is a wide-eyed intellectual who leads with their head, make sure that everything they do has a specific purpose. There are countless ways to give these characters a grounding in reality, so it’s important to experiment and have fun with it!

Not only is Ryan a great actor, he’s also a tremendous athlete. Ryan plays soccer, basketball, baseball, and tennis. He even has his yellow belt in Taekwondo, which he studies under Olympic Gold Medalist Grand Master Jun Lee! Suffice it to say, Ryan picks up anything he puts his mind to quickly.
